7 things I want my teenage daughter to know

Teenage Daughter portraitPin thisimageMy Daughter on your Birthday,

Another year has come and gone. You are now preparing to enter high school. Even thinking about it makes my heart race. There are so many things I want for you and so many things I need you to hear as you enter in to this chapter of life, but for now here are the 7 things I want you to always remember:

1) Love:

First, no matter what you think, I love being your mommy, I love you, I love you more than I ever knew humanly possible. Nothing you could ever do would stop me from loving you. I do want you to have fun, I want to see you smile everyday. When I look at you I see deeper than anyone else possibly could. I see what you are capable of. I see what your heart desires. But I also see how habits and situations can break you down and it is my job to guide you and set boundaries until you are ready to cut through the tape and be on your own. I am not a perfect mother, I know that. I push you hard and hold you tight at the same time. I have always worried about you for one reason or another. But now, oh my gosh, it is harder than ever! I know what evil is around and I know “that would never happen to me” is a statement of all youth until it does happen. I do not let you go out at night without an adult not because you are not trustworthy but because others out there are not.

2) Becoming a woman:

You are in a place now where you are not a little girl but also not a woman. That’s a hard confusing place to be. It is also an exciting place to be. Find your passions, laugh and be silly, make mistakes and enjoy this time. Before you know it you will be an adult so do not rush it let yourself have these 4 years of childhood. My hope for you is to become a strong independent woman that does not depend on others to live life to the fullest. Do this on your own then find someone that brings out the best in you and adds joy to your life and do the same for them.

3) Education:

I don’t let you get away with not doing school work because I know you are capable! You have to push past the limit and not think it is to hard, because I know you can do anything you want to and I am right here anytime you need my support. Get an A or a C I don’t care but work hard and be proud of your accomplishments. That’s all I want, to see you be proud of yourself.

4) Open book:

I’ll keep saying this for all my life. You can tell me anything. Ask me awkward, scary, embarrassing questions all the time. I will always be honest and not judge. I will pick you up in the middle of the night when you feel uncomfortable somewhere even if you are some place you were not supposed to be. Please know above all else I will be here for you. Nothing you do will stop my love.

5) Mistakes:

Yes, you will do things that will disappoint me and we will talk it out, but we all do that so don’t feel alone when you make mistakes. God knows I have disappointed people. The point is to learn and grow from them. I make mistakes and so will you. Don’t be afraid to fail! The only way you can fail at something is to not try. So put yourself out there and fail at things. This will make you successful in the long run.

6) Relationships:

you will think you are in love and most likely you will feel heartbreak. Don’t let that stop you from loving. You will continue to change and that means what you find important in a relationship now might be different in a few years. But all good things are worth waiting for and never feel like you need to give away apart of yourself in order for someone to love you. It doesn’t work that way. That will always lead to regret. Save yourself until someone who truly deserves you, and that you deserve back comes along.

7) Choose your friends wisely:

They are lucky to have you. You care so deeply for those you love and you are the type of friend worth holding on to for life. You are an amazing soul and deserve love and respect from your friends. Surround yourself with successful people and you will be a success.

You are a great friend, daughter, and sister. There is such passion inside you wanting to break out and change the world. Follow your heart and you will accomplish all you seek out of life. You are beautiful on the outside but more importantly you have a beautiful soul. Never let that fire inside you burn out. Be brave, adventurous and strong. Work your butt off and accomplish more than you even knew possible. I know you can do it, and I will always be right here by your side to cheer you on, cry with you, and laugh with you. I love you baby girl. Happy birthday! Being your mom for the last 14 years is the best part of my life. Thank you for growing and living this crazy life with me. We have been through so much together and I am glad to have you with me on this journey.
